The Commercial Pilot Licence is the gateway to flying a commercial aircraft, making it the chief aim of many pilots in the aviation industry. In order to submit your licence to the SACAA and finally receive your Commercial Pilot’s Licence, you will need to meet the following requirements:

 

  • General Radio License
  • Minimum of 200 hours of total flying time
  • Including 100 hours as Pilot in Command & 20 hours cross country flying (hour building)
  • 10 hours of night flying (night rating)
  • 1x day 300nm cross country flight with at least 2 landings
  • 1x night 150nm triangular cross-country flight
  • Theoretical Exams by CAA (8 subjects)
  • Flight test with a Designated Examiner

Training

The CPL training includes both theoretical and practical components. The theoretical component covers topics such as meteorology, flight planning, radio aids, navigation, instruments, air law and procedures, human performance, and aircraft technical and general. The practical component includes flight training with an instructor and solo flight training.

Timeline

You can typically obtain your CPL in 12-18 months, depending on your availability and progress.
